Role: Designer
This project features a mix of techniques including photo collage, illustration, and typesetting. The basis for the design was inspired by a chosen emotion, in my case I went with agony. I wanted to push the idea of what agony is and how it can appear both internally and externally. The work features a base of two color-corrected royalty free images of two busts of Medusa, as well as photos of ball pythons (my favorite snakes) to give more dimension to the snake hair. I chose the Medusa symbolism as it is a symbol of strength for those who have experienced sexual violence, drawn from the story of Medusa. To construct the left side of the bust, using the photo as a base, I used warped and cut photos of myself and my friends, with illustrated portions to create a more seamless amalgamation of facial features. The interior of the bust features my interpretation of a biblically accurate angel, whose bands are gold with photos of my own eyes. This figure is bleeding neon blue pixelated fluid, meant to act as both blood and tears. Finally, for the type, I wanted to give the piece a more stable framing as well as using the directions of the text to help draw the eye around the piece. You can experience this piece in three forms; a poster, a billboard, and a website landing page. Each format came with their own challenges but in the end create a cohesive final product.
